Fish has been breeded in artificial circumstances for already hundreds of years, the first experiments in Estonia were made a bit more than one hundred years ago. Similarly to other agricultural producers the production of fish farming decreased at the beginning of 1990s in several times. By today the situation has changed – the amount of World’s natural fish resources decreases rapidly, at the same time the demand for healthy fish increases year by year.
The most popular fish, which is breeded in Estonia is rainbow trout, which is followed by carp, eel and sturgeon. In recent years there have also been experiments with rarely known fishes such as with Tilapia and Barramundi.
Estonia has been and is now again going to become a marine state, occupation and limits to catch fish from the sea made its mark to our consumers’ knowledge and customs. Instead of choosing fresh native fish, people often prefer cheaper but not so fresh foreign fish. Regarding the habits of our Northern neighbours we may still hope that the evaluation and consumption of native fish increases considerably in the nearest future.
Remedium’s co-operation with the World’s most innovative producer of fish feed Biomar has also given an opportunity to the Estonian fish farmers to achieve rapid growth of fish and meat of high quality.
